How is the noise level calculated on generators?

Noise level or dBA levels are calculated by doosan diesel generator manufacturer at full load operation.  The USA standard is based on the sound level at 21 feet while the European standard is based on the sound level at 23 feet. In this article, we explain each  5 levels by relative noise level, to give you a a better understanding of one sound to another. This gives you a better explanation than just trying to involve a complicated mathematical formula.
50 to 55 dBA-Entertainment Industry Quiet -  barely hear the unit operate at 3 feet can have normal conversation next to genset. These genset have special and expensive sound attenuated.
56 to 60 dBA-Ultra quiet/design  - for rental fleets or residential applications. Barely hear the unit operate at 10 feet, normal conversation at 10 feet.
61 to 63 dBA-Super quiet - Special sound attenuation enclosure normally with air-scoops and dense form. Quiet operation at 21 feet, normal conversation at 10 feet.
64 to 68 dBA residential quiet - well designed enclosure with air-scoops and foam. Quiet but noticeable at 10 feet, normal conversation at 21 feet.
69 to 75 dBA industrial quiet - well designed enclosure with air-scoop and dense form. Noticeable noise level at 10 feet, loud conversation at 21 feet.
dBA Levels and their applications
In average residential application, the dBA levels in the 64 to 68 range are usually acceptable and meet most noise level restrictions if any exist.  Some engines are noisier than other and obviously a smaller generator is typically quieter than an large one. Usually the noise level in diesel generators are handle by enclosure design, air flow, and the quality and type of insulation used. The front air-scoops are designed to remove radiator sound. Special grade muffler systems are used to help reduce the engine noise.
Most manufacturer can design and work with you to meet any noise level restrictions you might need. A quality manufacturer usually can supply you with a special ultra quiet doosan diesel generators in both switchable stationary, mobile design or stationary for industrial and residential high end applications where sound regulations or zone covenants place restrictions on sound level.
